In 1941, a 5¢ scribbler lined with initial business transactions became the starting point of what would become the largest single-branch credit union in Canada. Manager P.J. Reimer probably never knew - as he entered the 50¢ deposits and $25 loans - exactly what he was starting. But by the end of that year the Steinbach Credit Union had 95 loyal members.
Five years later, SCU moved into its own office building. Growth in the first twenty years was slow and steady, but each decade saw larger expansion: a new building on Main Street in 1960 and the first computer system in the late 1970s.
By 1986, with a new head office, SCU assets stood at almost $160 million with a membership of over 15,000. The biggest change was the introduction of new technology: Automated Teller Machines, internet and telephone banking. With these advances, many members changed the way they did their banking.
Growth has now mushroomed to over 70,000 members from a wide geographical area, and we now manage assets in excess of $2 billion. Due to this boom, our second location opened its doors on February 17, 2003.
The Linden Ridge Branch situated at 2100 McGillivray Blvd. in Winnipeg, better serves approximately 25,000 of our Winnipeg area members. Staffed by over 80 employees, it is situated in the centre of Winnipeg’s fastest growing residential and commercial developments: Linden Woods and Whyte Ridge.
We are now part of the Winnipeg community and we look forward to a continued rise in awareness of what we have to offer, and the further growth that awareness will bring. With our sights set firmly on the future, we are poised to maintain our high level of service as new technology arrives on the scene, making the SCU experience even better for every member.
