ATM security: 11 ways to protect yourself

Visiting an ATM is an easy and convenient way to withdraw cash when you need. However, it’s important to always be aware of your surroundings and use your common sense and intuition to stay safe while withdrawing money.

How to protect yourself

  • If the ATM is obstructed from view or poorly lit, visit another ATM.

  • Check your surroundings before you approach the ATM. Does anything or anyone look suspicious? Is anyone watching you or loitering close by?

  • Try to avoid using an ATM after dark, or bring a companion whenever possible while using an ATM after hours.

  • Always park close to the ATM in a well-lit area.

  • Do not leave your car unlocked or the engine running when you get out to use an ATM.

  • Have your card ready prior to approaching the ATM.

  • Shield the screen and keyboard so anyone waiting to use the ATM cannot see you enter your PIN or transaction amount.

  • If you see anyone or anything suspicious, cancel your transaction and leave immediately. If anyone follows you after making a transaction, go to a crowded, well-lit area and call the police.

  • Put your cash, card, and receipt away immediately. Count your money later.

  • Always keep your receipt if you print one.  Do not throw it out at the ATM location.

  • When using drive-through ATMs be sure all passenger doors are locked, and windows are up.  As soon as your transaction is complete, close your window and move on right away.
